Hey, Joe--

I don't remember every teacher I ever had, though I do remember the teacher in the photo I added (above) to this story. Miss Kaner. I learned recently we were her first class. She worked 40 years (give or take) in the same school system and is now (I believe) retired. I can also remember most of the names of the students in the photo.

I can remember playing dodge ball and "box ball" in the schoolyard. Box ball was like kickball, except you bounced a Spaldeen pinky on home plate, hit it with your fist when it reached the top of its arc, and rounded the bases. We used the same pinky to play "stoop ball" on the steps in front of our house. I can remember wandering the streets of Little Ferry, unsupervised as long as the sun was up, getting into all the trouble a 7, 8, and 9-year-old can devise.

The clay excavation pit must have tapped into an underground water source related to the Hackensack River. It was an eyesore in 1970, but is now just a humble little town lake with marsh grass, ducks, and egrets. My family lived in an apartment on Marshall Avenue until July of 1972.

Thanks for reading.

Hey man!
1966 graduate of Wilson School here. Loved the description of the school, town and especially Willow "Lake". Come to think of it, in all my years of walking back and forth to school from 1957 to 1966, I never saw one living thing in or on Willow "Lake". Not a duck, or anything. But I'll tell you one thing, I loved that school. I can name every teacher i had too, and all my friends. Hope you get this. P.S. I lived on Beech Street, a dead end (literally).

I'm betting if you think I'd think she was cool, I'm sure I'd think she was too... but you're right, she'd be mandated to leave that guitar outside. (And yes, I read all the descriptions before I clicked, and decided to 'hear it for myself.')

I still can't understand why you did not choose a career looking for talented indie musicians. More than anybody I've ever met, you've had an appetite for the relentless search for talent - and we both know that's true because now that you are, ahem, older, you *still* have the same love of finding hidden gems.

Jazz would be great...Blues would be completely wonderful too. I keep going into NYC, but you must know some great places in Jersey. Just name it..........

I'm no expert, but I get the general sense that Marissa Paternoster is a person you would have liked, back in our undergrad days. As long as she wasn't holding a guitar when you met her.

Kudos for clicking on a link clearly labeled with the phrase "caterwauling noise." We owe each other a quiet evening of jazz at one of these places you've mentioned, before you depart forever to sunnier climes.

Holy crap, I tried to listen to "Doom 84" by Screaming Females and I had to turn it off in the first 10 seconds. My ears started to bleed. I cannot, no, I will not, listen to even one more second of that thing (it's not a song, it's a thing.)

That is definitely the worst thing I've heard, possibly ever.

On the other hand, I really enjoyed "This Summer" which is some pop-ish retro styled piece with a great beat.

I'll try to listen to a few more, but if anyone reading this attempts the same thing, people - you take on these songs at your own risk!

These '15 Songs' posts are rapidly becoming a pre-Christmas ritual in these parts. Like decorating the tree, or that reactive urge to cope with Yuletide bleh by wanting to smoke heroin.

And spot on as always. I mean, I'd fight you on the battlements for at least half of your selections, whilst those your iPod has selected, it has done so for the wrong reasons. But there's some damn fine tunes in this. And even stronger memories. .
